June: Silence the Violence Month of Action

17 years ago, the members of Church of the Messiah in Detroit were completely fed up  with the gun violence in their community. So they decided to march.

The Silence the Violence March is a chance to remember the victims of gun violence and bring together all the local organizations working for peace and safety. It has now grown to an enormous thousand person event in Detroit and has spread all across Michigan as a month of action against gun violence.

We're proud to announce more than 20 Silence the Violence events all across Michigan throughout the month of June (and more are coming along soon). We called on our members to organize events that demonstrated the spirit of gun violence prevention in their community, and they have delivered.

There will be marches, but also community resource fairs, film screenings, gun lock distributions, arts events, trainings and teach-ins, and even a gun buy-back with on-site gun destruction.

In addition to the original march in Detroit, there are events in Flint, Ypsilanti,

Muskegon, Niles, Grosse Pointe, Grand Rapids, Milford, Whitehall, Southfield,

Traverse City, Holland, Oxford, Hudsonville, Grand Haven, Holland, Ann Arbor

and Inkster. There will shortly be events organized in Lansing and Pontiac.

Please sign up so we know you're coming and let us know if you can volunteer!

This year, we actually have something to celebrate: Michigan passed four

historic gun laws last year that WILL save lives. And we're going to use the

month of June to make sure that everyone knows about them.

PS: June is also "Wear Orange Month." You can find a local event here!
